Texas Independence Relay Results

The results are in for the 2010 running of the Texas Independence Relay, one of the coolest races to be found in Texas or elsewhere, for that matter. Congratulations to all the participants, to the numerous volunteers, and to race organizers Joy and Jay Hilscher.

Several San Antonio based teams ran the event. Kudos to Dr. Mitchell Finnie, a runner with Los Paisanos, the top finishing SA team. They covered the 203+ miles in 24 hours 53 minutes 30 seconds. The team from the Mid-Texas Symphony, which I led, finished in 29 hours 42 minutes 48 seconds.

Worried about your knees or hips? Avoid injury.

This interesting blurb from Real Age just popped up on my radar screen and I think it's worth noting that it is not running which contributes to deterioration of the knees - it's injury. Further reason to observe moderation. "Aerobic exercises such as walking, cycling, or swimming are low impact and gentle on joints. You may want to avoid running if your knees hurt, but evidence suggests running itself does not increase the risk of developing knee problems in the future. Injuries do. So whichever aerobic exercise you choose, don’t overdo it."

Big Bend Ultra Lives!

It is now official. The Big Bend Ultra will return on January 16, 2011 after a 3 year hiatus. The press release announces:

"The Big Bend Ultra Marathon will return Sunday, January 16, 2011. The race will include 50K and 25K trail races and introduce a new RGV/Hot Springs 10K race."

This is one of my favorite races and I hope you will join me out at Big Bend in January 2011 for this stunning run through the outback of one of our most rugged National Parks. But don't begin to believe this is a race only for the experienced trail runner. Quoting further the press release:

"The BB50 race is not run at altitude. It starts at 3,200 feet (975 meters) and drops to 1,900 feet (579 meters), so it's a steady downhill race on the park dirt roads. The 50K course goes down Black Gap Road, then on to River Road, and back past the Mariscal mercury-cinnabar mines to Glen Spring Road."
